Casa Cave

Older than its famous neighbour, Confeitaria Colombo, and with less art-deco exuberance, but far easier to get a table. Charming, well-preserved decor, and traditional Portuguese-style pastries and sweets fit for royalty. Dom Pedro II, the last emperor of Brazil, is said to have been a fan of the cashew icecream, which is unfortunately no longer on the menu, but you can see a number of egg-yolk custard deserts, which popular folklore says Catholic nuns invented after using the whites to starch their habits.

Order: The house specialties are the pastel de nata and the different flavours of Mil folhas.

Rua Sete de Setembro 133, Centro
